Check out free space and memory usage. When you start KDE from a boot, memory 
usaeg should be between 60-70MB.

Other way is either you have played with APM settings or messed with kde 
configurations. You can try different APM settings with BIOS and see what works 
best for you.

Also try this. Shut down X and come back to prompt. And rename .kde to say, 
.kdeold. And restart KDE and configure it from scratch. See if that helps.

Or create another user and try using KDE within that login. If it's equally 
slow, most probably APM is to blame.

Happned to me once when I was loading Mandrake8.0. It took 5-7 minutes to reach 
to first dialog. Total installation was 1:50 hours. Unusually slow.. But once 
APM set to ACPI/APM, it just flew..
