/var/log/messages is your friend.

Did you enable ipchains at boot?

Your firewall should do that. Actually, don't bother. A failed portscan
can tell as much as a successful one to an attacker. It will stop 99% of
the kiddies out there, but the good ones will learn more from a blocked
scan than from an ordinary probe.
