So your load average is going pretty high. Find out what the reason for it
is. If it is just more sendmail processes ... there's the parameters

define(`confQUEUE_LA',`25')dnl
define(`confREFUSE_LA',`25')dnl

where I have set sendmail to queue (and also refuse) connections at a load
average of 25.

Then there's

define(`confMAX_DAEMON_CHILDREN',600)dnl
define(`confCONNECTION_RATE_THROTTLE',30)dnl

you can adjust, as well as some other timeouts around... see cf/README in the
sendmail source for a discussion on tuning.

Then put your mail spool on a fast journaling filesystem.

Then start using DNSBLs to stop people spamming you ... what happens over a
period of time when you have users is that they get more spam than legit
mail. Then there's stuff like viruses etc which chew your bandwidth as well.

Finally, try adding an extra stick of RAM, and/or a SCSI hard disk instead of
IDE, to your machine. Works wonders on performance.

There is no way to know the exact number of Linux users in the
world ... a counter was set up five years ago. All linux users
NOT registered should do a one-time registration at:
