That does not hold water. Most mail clients can store SMTP authentication information, so your fussy, low-level clients will have to enter the auth info only once. And with pam, you can set both POP and SMTP passwords to be the same. Talking from personal experience, the only reason admins don't implement SMTP AUTH is laziness. > Does anyone know of any patch/anything that should be done to poprelayd to > get it working, or can anyone suggest an alternative within the constraint > that I have. Some general observations. These might help you troubleshoot. The way most POP before SMTP scripts work is: they monitor /var/log/maillog for possible POP logins, and extract client IP addresses from them. These addresses are stored in a place where the SMTP server can then later on find them. So: 1. If you upgrade your POP server software, most likely reason for failure is that the log entry format has changed, and the script cannot parse the entry. 2. If you upgrade your SMTP server software, most likely reason for failure is that the place where the server looks for IP addresses to relay for has changed, and the script is writing to the wrong place. In your case, you upgraded from sendmail 8.9.x to 8.12.x. Most configuration files were moved into /etc/mail between these two versions. This might be the cause of your problem. Incidentally, once one client from an SNAT network logs onto the POP server, I suppose these scripts will allow relaying for all clients from that LAN. I am personally unfamiliar with the workings of poprelayd.
