Mailscanner is also a mail scanning software written in perl, similar to amavis. I have never used amavis so cannot comment. However mailscanner works very well with sendmail & exim. Postfix is not yet supported. Work in progress as far as postfix & mailscanner combination. In case you are thinking of using sendmail or exim than you can try out mailscanner. That's what I meant.
