Installed Mandrake 8.2 on my PI/166/32 m/c. Runs well, but had some problems.
I had installed gnome, kde, xfce, and the other window managers offered. Total install was only about 680MB. The same installed in RH7.2 consumes 1GB+, verified !! X worked well, in framebuffer mode, since my SiS6215 card was not supported. Xconfigurator did not work even though XFree86 was installed and though /bin had a file named Xconfigurator@. What is the @ for? I had to do with xf86config. I also did not find any RPM as Xconfigurator on the 3CDs, as is present in RH7.2. My sound card Yamaha 724 was detected by name correctly. But no sound came from it. Audio CDs would play very well but under X, system sounds were totally silent. At one point of time, I was informed that gnome-sound is not installed. How does one install that - no RPM again. When connecting to the internet, I missed the RH gnome applet which sits in the panel giving information about the connection speed and total time elapsed. For Mandrake, the program was 'net-monitor'. Every time I wanted to connect, I was asked for the root password, and then even though connection was established and the to and fro traffic displayed in graphical form, there was a note at the bottom - 'not connected'. For disconnection, I had to click on a largish button asking me forever 'wait please', and after the line HAS been disconnected, another complain 'unable to disconnect'!!! Has anyone (Mandrake user's) experienced such strange behaviour? Regards, K.Ghosh. _______________________________________________________________ Don't miss the 2002 Sprint PCS Application Developer's Conference August 25-28 in Las Vegas -- http://devcon.sprintpcs.com/adp/index.cfm _______________________________________________ linux-india-help mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linux-india-help
