Hello,
The problem was due to the fact that i had backed up my .procmailrc file to a
cd and then copied it back from there. this added a "^M" character at the end
of each line which was not visible in either gvim or vim. this is a problem
that can also happen if you edit the file in windblows or ftp it from a
windows machine (i guess). anyway, it's solved now. thanks to all who pitched
in, esp. Dileep and Rajesh. this is a problem that could happen to anyone and
is really frusterating to debug. anyone who uses procmail should IMHO be
aware that this could crop up.
