At a particular stage of the open source software's development what you say
is true.  The fact that the source code is open also means that security
conscious experts can audit the code and bless it if it passes their
rigorous scrutiny.  Of course, all of this is in theory.  In practice, only
mature open source software are more secure as they have had years of
scruitny.
