Hello everybody,

Everytime I install Linux somewhere along with
firewall and some other services, in a LAN I screw up.
Did it again this time.

The set up I was trying at our college internet room
was as follows:
A Linux Internet Gateway and LAN server (same machine)
through which four other windows machines would connect
to the internet.
I was told to install Mandrake 8.1 on the machine and
while installing, I chose "high security" and during
software selection, I chose almost all services like
Firewall, Mail server, etc.
After installation, I stopped almost all of them, hoping
to enable them later when I was ready (maybe after reading
the Firewall howto and the IP-Masquerading howto.)

Now, the problem is, whenever I try to connect to the
internet using dial-up, no connections go out. Most
probably, the local ip addresses(I mean, the addresses of
the local machines) are being checked. Obviously, when
I say http://www.google.com in a browser, I get
"host not found" error.

Please tell me what could be the possible reasons for this.
Presently, at home, I am not on Mandrake, but Woody.

As you can well understand, I am an absolute layman as far as
networking is concerned. Last time I ran into a similar
problem in Debian, I found that the file /etc/resolve.conf was
missing. (This time this is not the problem.)

Santanu Chatterjee
