Is this a new installation ? It seems that your installation has
not completed satisfactorily or is incomplete. init is the mother
of all processes, and you can proceed no further. It seems that
your /etc/inittab is either missing or corrupt.

If yours is a new installation, please re-install with defaults.

If you have valuable data in it, boot through a stand-alone linux
distro, mount your root partition and write a fresh inittab. I am
not very sure about the MDK set up myself ... some MDK type on
our list could help here.

thanks for the reply,
No it is not an new installation. I have it working for nearly an year now.
I was trying to load the java drivers for mysql given with the pcquest
magazine when something went wrong[I was working as root to load it] and I am
unable to init mandrake.
I am unable to re-install using the cd since it gives some error in
partition table and hangs. I am unable to install any other linux distro too
because of this. I am only able to get in linux single mode or rescue mode.
