Hi 
I installed it about 2 weeks back with no problems whatsoever.
Ensure that the file /etc/modules contains i810. 
insmod i810 ought to do it and will report any errors.

Try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to set up X if you have not
already done so. I have upgraded from the 4.1 in woody to 4.2pre
 in sid. Works perfectly fine in both.
