it is a pain in the neck for people who need to be spoon fed. I was
giving a answer to a person who was having a difficulty compilling
mplayer. I didnt discuss the merits or demerits of the solution. I
would suggest you look up what those two options actually do.

The second option is what will help you compile using gcc 2.96.

The first option is for ease of managing applications. If you compile
the way I have suggested you wont have to worry about removing mplayer
in the future. A rm -rf /usr/local/mplayer will do that for you. If you
dont give a prefix mplayer will be dumped all over /usr/local/bin
/usr/local/man and /usr/local/share I am sure someone has suggested
that is the best place to hunt for all the files if you ever wanted to
remove mplayer.

I would suggest you use amritanjan for your neck and type in

ln -s /usr/local/mplayer/bin/mplayer /usr/local/bin/mplayer

Your nice upgrade to gcc 3.x might have some interesting complications
for you if you end up using a shared library compiled with gcc 2.96
which is like each and every binary on your RedHat installation ??

If you stay subscribed to the mailling list a bit longer you will find
out that no one has ever faced a problem using mplayer compiled with
gcc 2.96 even though mplayer says it is not recommended.
