in fact, mplayer broke for the first time when i compiled it with
gcc3.2, which is the default in mandrake 9. the resulting binary crashed
when i tried to run it with -vo vesa. this never happened with versions
compiled with 2.96.
so much for arpad gereoffy's rant against redhat and 2.96.
