I agree with you...but a simpler way is to block the specific hosts names
which host the messenger service. e.g. you can block

scsa.msg.yahoo.com
scsb.msg.yahoo.com
scsc.msg.yahoo.com

to completely stop yahoo messenger.

I don't know abt MSN messenger...but you can do a packet capture to find it
out.
