Suresh

I ran a check on the net (google) and found the same message on several
other lists
even in the redhat support forum there was such a message and all the
complaint
was related to pppd getting disconnected due to error no 16 that from the
man page
of pppd says is modem hangup.

I started from base.. removed the usb-kernel, hotplug rpms, and some gphoto
was
and three instances of camera also depending on the hotplug was removed.
again
the pppd was compaining. I found this strange since I had two accounts one
with the vsnl and other with dishnet. while all this hicups, vsnl used to
connect,
and hold for say some 30 minutes or so before dropping and reconnecting, but
dishnet did not connect at all.

This after a rigorous pondering, I pulled out a new hdd, and installed
RedHat 7.1 on
that.. used wvdial.conf from the RH 8.0 which was showing problems, and
tried
to connect to the dishnet... Lo!!! it connected and there was no problem for
more
than an hour after which I disconnected the modem. Now I mounted this
Installation root into a location on RH 8.0 and ran a diff on both /etc/ppp

The funny thing was that RH 7.1 had a pap-secrets file which was updated
long after
I had installed the package and this was having an entry for
username-password
but the same file in RH 8.0 did not have any entry atall.. I copied the
pap-secrets
from RH 7.1 to RH 8.0, unmounted the 7.1 installation and tested the wvdial.
It connects!

summary -- (my findings)
the wvdial of rh7.1 used to update the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets, where as that
of
RH 8.0 did not (or could not) I did not check that possibility if there is
one.

I am not sure why RedHat thinks that way... I always try to avoid these
devices
since I cannot afford for a machine which provides one ;-)
