[LIH]Copying files & Directories with permissions

Hello All,
I want to migrate data from exsisting server to a new server, How do I preserve permissions after copying to what exsisted in the earlier setup.
I tried cp -p -r but it replaces ownership with the login id that is being copied.
Any hints.
