(a) Mail User Agent
(b) Mail Transfer Agent
(c) Mail Delivery agent

2> Read the manual for your MUA. What does your MUA use if you do not
specify a SMTP server? What are the alternative interfaces for this
application? What type of application is it?

3> Google for the equivalent applications on Windows.
