I think Athlon offeres better performance than p4 . for the price of a p4 you can go for a higher athlon processor and more ram . an athlon 2.6 and kt400 will be a nice choice . add a geforce 4 mx 440 you will get a powerdemon which wont burn hole in your pocket . and it is supported by linux. hardisk go for a ata 4 specification . most of the creative sound cards are also supported by linux
