Direct PDF is infact possible in windows. This can be IMHO be done in two
ways :
1) Use Adobe Distiller which converts any of your documents to PDF

2) There is a free software (printer port i think) called RedMon. Install
it in your computer then you get a virtual printer port (say LP2). Now
install another free software called FreePDF(There are many like this on
the net but this is my favourate). Now when you open a document in say
MSWord and press the print button, the redmon will redirect it to a
software of your choice (in this case freePDF) for further changes. The
only catch here is that you should have Ghostscript installed in your
computer because FreePDF uses ghostscript to convert your documents to
PDF. Also you should have a postscript printer driver installed in your
computer (you have it in windows 98 OS CD) no need of an actual printer
to be connected at all.
