No.
What he wants is to preserve his applications/windows and change the window manager.
That's possible.
I don't remember for icewm but for windowmaker, put the following line in the 'Exit'
section of ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu
("Start IceWM", RESTART, icewm),
Now, (after restarting wmaker, which again can be done without exiting), use the
right mouse (under normal settings for right-handed people), you'll get a menu,
go to the Exit section, then then you will see the above line "Start IceWM", which
you should select. Voila!
You can do similar things for starting KDE etc. What's more, you can even define
keyboard
shortcuts!
Check icewm manuals to find how to do this in icewm. Used to do this a lot when I felt
like changing the environment during long sessions, without having to shutdown the
current
session, switching between wmaker and icewm.
KDE doesn't allow this :(
