You can use `dig`, to query nameservers. In your case, you can find out if your ISP's nameservers are up and running using `dig`. So, if your ISP has given nameserver of 202.1.1.1, $ dig @202.1.1.1 linux-india.org You mentioned that you're using PPP (KPPP) to connect, so find out whether it supports an option, wherein the ISP's DNS IPs could be automagically entered into resolv.conf The "usepeerdns" option in ppp can do this.
