on windows OS using Netscape Messaging server. Due to
frequent crashes and virus problem, we planned to
shift on Linux based mail server.
Local mail server is connected to a central mail
server over a permanent wan link. Further central mail
server is connected to VSNL oner leased line.
Central web server will cont=inue to run on existing
setup, only local mail server is being shift as first
phase to test.

REQUIREMENT:
-----------
-no of user on mail server = 500+
-Local user require webbased (using netscape/mozilla)
as well as client based (Kmail/evolusion) access of
mailserver.
-user authentication for accessing mails.
-local users address book on mail server
-assume 80:20 rule, 80 persent traffic is local.
Protocol used SMTP & POP3.

FOLLOWING OPTION ARE FIGURED OUT. KINDLY SUGGEST BEST
CHOICE.
MAIL TRANSPORT AGENT
--------------------
which one should be choosen ( I m starting
installation from scract. We need web as well as
client based access of mail server)
choice:sendmail/qmail/postfix/exim/any-other

MAIL DELIVERY AGENT:
--------------------
choice:Squirellmail/procmail/spamsassion/Any_other

(Is it really required, if my local mail server is
connected on permanent link to central server?

MAIL USER AGENT
---------------
Choice fot text based :mutt/pine/Any_other
Choice fot web based:netscape/mozill/Any_other
Choice fot client based
:Balsa/evolution/Kmail/MozillaMail

Fetchmail?
---------
Is required to grab local user mail from central
server on local mail server?
[local mail server connected over permanent wan link]

POP3 SERVER
-----------
To provide pop services on local mail server.
Choice: qpopper/imap/Any_other

USER Authentication
--------------------
What method i can use to authenticate mail users to
access mail server. Is it fine to use /etc/passwd for
500 users. In this case how can i maintain address
book at mail serve? Is ldap can be used? If yse how?

Proxy:
------
In spite of above, will thete be any requirement of
proxy server to be runned on mail server, like squid
etc.

Need suggestion those who are already running mail
server on Linux and/of have experience on these type
of system.

thanks in advance
