If the line  "smtp" is commented in /etc/inetd.conf,  then you need to
do this only.

#/etc/init.d/exim start

No  need  to  edit  the  startup scripts  manually.  update-rc.d  does
everything perfectly.

cok:/home/fme# ps -A |grep exim
9406 ?  00:00:00 exim
cok:/home/fme#
