For the exact similar setup where you had the problem, try compiling the
native filesystem support into your kernel, rather than as a module. If
you do this and still get the problem, would like to know. 

http://www.digitalhermit.com/~kwan/kernel.html has an updated
kernel-howto, which like the last kernel-howto at tldp.org has its flaws,
especially for compiling kernel 2.6.x
