Memory can make a world of difference to X. Try adding another 128 Megs to your present 128 and you might see a significant improvement in your GUI apps. Video card graphic specifications and memory don't really matter all that much for 2D rendering, which is what most of your X apps use.... but it does matter for 3D rendering. I assume you've disabled all the unnecessary services from your box.
