Is your DVD-RW internal or external (firewire? USB?).
Are you using kernel 2.4 or 2.6?
If you are using 2.6 kernel, you don't need scsi emulation.
You should try cdrecord-prodvd.
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/
Also enable DMA for the dvdwriter.
Google should get you relevent answers on all these points.
