Yes, I had understood the problem of the OP clearly.
Mounting a vcd and manually playing it's .dat file works in mplayer, bear in 
mind that you need a good disc unsketched/unscratched

Though for  pure vcd format cd's `mplayer vcd://1` would be better, you won't 
even need to mount the cd.
