Windows XP must be reporting some error message related to the file
hal.dll (Hardware Abstractin Layer) along with a hex code. Are Win98

from another WinXP installation.

insert the win XP installation CD and enter in the recovery console....
on the recovery console prompt, execute the command "chkdsk / r"
this is your last option. If this doesn't work try reinstalling WinXP
