Disclaimer: I have no first hand experience for the kind of setup
suggested above. It does seem like an out of the ordinary design.
Why is it out of the ordinary? RADIUS is often used for this type of
setup.
Radius is mainly deployed for edge of network authentication on RASs and
routers. Samba is not commonly deployed over WANs but over LANs.
Authenticating a [mainly] LAN service from a [mainly] WAN authentication
source is uncommon.
802.1q (Switch port authentication).
Definitely common (or should be).
802.1q is the VLAN spec. AFAIK[1], it has no provision for authentication.
Vendors provide mechanisms for 802.1q tagging which may have support for
authentication and authorization mechanisms. E.g. Cisco boxes can
dynamically be handed 802.1q tags through VQP and OpenVMPS works as a
great solution as the policy system [don't need the big boy Catalyst
switches for it - yay!], albeit the tagging is limited to MAC address
based policies - though the code is simple and could be easily extended
for more sophisticated policies.
Perhaps you meant 802.1x, where you would use Radius, though AFIAK[1]the
standard does not require it. Admittedly though, Radius is the most
common option as the authentication server for forwarding the EAPOL
requests to. [Actually, I am not aware of any other authentication
server used in 802.1x deployments - would be happy to learn of
alternatives].
In any case, port based authentication is not a service, but a network
access control mechanism.
And now, could we get back to the "Linux" part of Linux-India-Help?
[1]Haven't read the official specs.
