Sorry, I haven't been following the thread since it was debian..;-) Pardon me 
if this was said before..

I have same chipset on my workstation here  and it works at fine 1280x1024.

All I did was X -configure, fill in the monitor defaults and go. Well actually 
that was when slack10 was on it. I live upgraded it to slack10.1 yesterday.  
It did involve some other tweaks to xorg.conf.

Here is relevant portion of xorg.conf

        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "i810"
        VendorName  "Intel Corp."
        BoardName   "82845G/GL [Brookdale-G] Chipset Integrated Graphics

And to obtain good resolution, you need enough VGA memory and correct monitor 
frequencies. I hope you have both of these things..
