I am using Debian testing/unstable w/ a hathway cable connection. I use
fetchmail to download all my mail. I always tail -f the fetchmail log.

Yesterday as I was downloading my mail, fetchmail had downloaded several
mails when it suddenly started showing DNS errors and was unable to
fetch any more mails. This occured for two different webhosts plus VSNL
and gmx.net.

I could not browse using firefox. I could ping my gateway and
www.vsnl.net.in but nothing else. I could not even ping www.hathway.com.
I called up hathway but just could not get thru (which is nothing new).

I then rebooted into FC2 on the same machine and could browse and ping
whatever I wanted. I rebooted into debian but no luck :(. Again all I
could do was ping the gateway and vsnl. Everything else had just
disappeared. I rebooted using Knoppix 3.8 and again, after configuring
the nic, I could browse and ping normally.

I have not done an apt-get upgrade for atleast a fortnight now. I have
not fiddled with anything inside /etc. So what could be the problem ?

thanks,

Sharukh
