FYKI, I did read the man page and am not ashamed to admit that I missed
the \% syntax completely. With the string working on CLI, my eyes saw
only the tree and not the branches (%), metaphorically of course.

It happens to the best of us no? I am willing to bet it has happened to
you as well i.e. the problem is staring at you in the face and you don't
see it.

My question seems to have irked you. I sense sarcasm in "Googling is
too ..." and "Do you see your ..." FYKI, I have been using Unix as an
end user since 1984, Linux as an user and admin since late 1994. As for
Google searching - I have been searching Unix/Linux archives since the
days of dejanews.com (early 1996) prior to Google acquiring them and
incorporating into their search archive. IMO, a Google search for my
particular problem would be an overkill.

I am disappointed that your correct answer is marred by your remarks. In
contrast, Raju Mathur has answered the problem so gracefully.
