every distro comes with the release notes describing what all and what
is not supported. going through the release notes would resolve most
of the queries. also it's not imperative to use the kernel which is
shipped with the distro in the form it is, you can always tweak it as
per the needs

the distros mentioned in the first mail of this thread are all general
purpose ones, so it's the responsibility of the users to tune it to
fit their needs.

on the final note, I would suggest to use the distro you have used
most or the one you are most comfortable with, considering the purpose
of the system, which is more trivial and not worth this much analysis
:)
