vsound also does a good job of capturing any audio output to /dev/dsp

$ apt-cache show vsound
Package: vsound
Priority: optional
Section: universe/sound
Installed-Size: 108
Maintainer: Eric Van Buggenhaut <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Architecture: i386
Version: 0.6-4
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.4-1), sox
Filename: pool/universe/v/vsound/vsound_0.6-4_i386.deb
Size: 14970
MD5sum: 819dec141dcb9d205e81083e92eaa6a2
Description: Virtual loopback sound recorder and real audio converter
 This program allows you to record the output of any standard OSS
 program (one that uses /dev/dsp for sound) without having to modify or
 recompile the program. It uses sox to convert and save the raw data
 into the desired file format and can help to convert real audio files
 to some other non-proprietary format.
