Actually, I tried it on my machine. Of course, I don't have bolnagri,
but I chose Bengali (at random, since it's the first language under
India). After adding it, I checked the 'default' box, to make it my
default, and then opened an OpenOffice word processor window and
started typing. It gave me Bengali characters. So I think it should
work for you too. :-)
(You'll have to select the English layout when you want to go back to
typing in English, of course.)
