Well! There is hope left still in this world!!
After reading your email I went digging on the internet and landed
up at the ati site.

They have posted a driver-cum-control panel for various ati cards
including the one I have.

The program installs an fglrx driver and an ATI Catalyst Control
Center (a gui which gives various options for controlling display
modes, 3d, colour etc.).

The installer is:
ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run

and you can download it from:

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

The site lists the concerned driver's date as August 2007, so it
is a pretty recent version. Also one of the FAQs explicitly
mentions thatthe "blacking" out problem when switching from
desktop to console is tackled by the driver.

Hope the above helps someone in a similar predicament.

Thanks for all the help

Regards
Pramathesh

The point is that the problem reported by me seems solved because
I am now zipping painlessly between console and desktop and back.
