Either you can compile it by using the latest source from madwifi.org
(old code and builds do not support AR242x) or maybe apt-get can help
you in getting pre compiled binary drivers in ubuntu

In fedora 9 I did this for support for AR242x series
yum --enablerepo=livna-testing install kmod-madwifi
i.e. use the livna-testing repo
and wireless worked fine.
