If it is getting mount as a non-root user, it must get unmounted also.
Mounting/unmounting is working properly in redhat 5.2 (from non-root user
also).

/dev/hbc (cdrom drive in u're case) must be linked to /dev/cdrom.  If
/dev/cdrom appears in fstab file, it is sufficient to mount/unmount a cdrom
drive.

Please send fstab file and output of  "ls -l /dev/cdrom " for more details.
