Greetings,

Goa University with support from the National Informatics Center,
Government of India has set up an "Advanced Center for Informatics" (ACI)
on the Goa University Campus.

One of the goals of the ACI is to provide consultancy for Open
Source solutions to Colleges, Universities and NGOs. The ACI also conducts
short term training programmes aimed at Corporates, Entrepreneurs and
Students to empower them to implement/promote the Open Source Philosophy
in their own organisations. A limited number (40% of the total capacity)
of free seats are available to students/researchers for each of the
courses conducted.

The ACI also provides support in the form of facilities and
computing infrastructure to students and persons representing NGO's, who
have non-trivial programming projects that they would like to develop.
Proposed Projects will be selected by a distiguished group of IT
professionals, and programmers selected for ACI support will be entitled
to free guest-house/hostel accomodation on the Goa University campus for a
period not exceeding 3 months at a time. Application forms for support may
be requested from <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and must include a detailed
project description, approximate duration of support required and the
proposed licensing method.

The ACI does not place any restriction on licensing modes or
distribution of projects developed at the ACI, though preference will be
given to those projects that are sought to be distributed under the GPL. A
separate cell to help student-programmers raise venture capital is also
planned, to start operation in April 2000. A poster describing the
activities of the ACI relevant to Universities and Colleges has been sent
to all recognised Universities and Departments of Computer Science.

The first course organised by ACI titled "Open Source for
Corporates --- Linux 2000" will be held from the 4th to the 7th of October
at Goa University. Students/Organisations interested in the acdemic
programmes of ACI may send email to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Announcements
about periodic training programmes will be posted to this forum, as well
as to recognised Universities.

        Thank you for your attention
