fsck fires up in either of the 2 cases.

1.  In case you do not reboot or shutdown normally
2. when the maximal count is reached.

I dont know how to alter the maximal count reached.

In case fsck fires up because of reason 1 U get the following messg.

/dev/hda5 was not cleanly unmounted .. check forced.
 In case 2 U get the messg /dev/hda5 maximal count reached check forced
