As someone has replied, it's a good idea to create an ext2 partition
called /boot to hold the images etc. This should be the first partition on
the physical drive.

Even if you don't do that, I have solved these kind of problems by adding
the word 'linear' in my lilo.conf file - even for IDE drives.
