Sniffers read packets not meant for the host running the sniffer.
They work on broadcast media such as Ethernet, satellite connxns ;P
etc. The Ethernet card (usually) is switched to promiscous mode
so that it does not discard packets not meant for it, and the sniffer
opens a raw (AF_INET,SOCK_PACKET/PF_PACKET,SOCK_RAW) socket on that
interface.
