Hi all, I had done a presentation on sunday at a local institution and missed the star show but the presentation was worth it. The local institution has added linux as a curriculum. Also I have to install them a neat system for functioning as a server for some odd 15 diskless boxes, for training java, perl, and as file server using lanmanager and dos 6. Phew! it was a job, thanks for the PCQ people, cause the vmware was a big hit. Thanks to all you people who gave me tips on perl, config of samba, python, etc. I demonstrated the installation of RHL 5.2, Slackware 3.2 and RHL 6.1. * wearing a helmet * The slackware 3.2 is found to be bit more fast than the others, also it has a lot more to tweak with. The RHL 5.2 and 6.1 both let me down at the kernel recompiling with an error "as86: command not found". This was there before so I showed a session of reconfiguring the kernel, with xconfig, on the Slackware. I was stuck when some one asked me the default services which get hosted on a linux box, on standard full install. But I managed to say "Web Server, SMTP server, POP3 server, FTP server, domain name server, scheduler (cron), SMB server", what are the others ? showed a slide show about linux, availablity, the developing community, discussion groups etc. The all three installations were made on the same machine with two hdd both 4.3 each, dual pentium II 350, 256 mb ram, Trident 8MB AGP, LG Studioworks 17" monitor. I allocated 256 MB as swap, divided the hdd into 800MB, 1 GB, 2Gb, put slack into 800MB, RHL 5.2 to 1 GB, RHL 6.1 to 2GB and shared the swap. Lilo did not complain, cause I did not permit lilo to install from RHL 5.2 or Slack ware, after all was installed, I manually added the other two and updated lilo boot. Also I had on display a P233, 4GB/64MB Trident 4MB PCI with RH 5.2 and StarOffice 5.0 for display (registered linux machine 67891). All together the show was a tremendous hit. Most of the people are staying away from linux because they are too lazy to learn some commands (prefer to click, here and there and be safe). So X86-AfterStep-StarOffice and vmware have hit the top of the show and made some 30 more interested in Linux. ============================================== Linux registered user #154193 -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Linux India Mailing List Archives are now available.
