Let's see - maybe because Linux tries to authenticate you each
time, times out and then allows you to send? See the following for
more help - or use your ISP's smtp server as that will allow all
clients to send mail directly.

Further, sendmail 8.8.x is full of security holes, outdated and
unsupported. Upgrade to 8.9.3 and rebuild your sendmail.cf file for
maximum security.
