Does your machine sleep periodically or randomly?

could be some cron job that writes to some device like a tape.....
checking messages should help.

also it is possible some real memory hog process is being run by an user,
something like opening a lot ofsockets and trying to tie up the servers resources.

did you install some new s/w yesterday since you mentioned this problem was
discovered yesterday..
