Thanks for helpful remarks and suggestions. I now use
"alias char-major-161 ircomm-tty" and run the irmanager
without discovery. That indeed stops "Waiting for sender.."
message on the Palm side.
Although Martin's remark on the use of "irattach /dev/ttyS0"
instead of "irattach /dev/ttyS2"

made me sit back and relax a little, I am still wondering how
the following two can happily coexist
setserial /dev/ttyS2 port 0x03e8 irq 10
irattach /dev/ttyS0

Bios settings are given as
IrDa in port 0x03e8, irq 10
Serial in port 0x03f8, irq 4
