I have a fried who has ported glib to the Pilot! Glib is used by gtk+ and
gnome, but is completely separate from these packages. If you look at glib,
you'll see that it makes a lot of sense, espessially if you want to be able
to port your application to different architectures (as I plan with OBEX).
As with all software, glib is not _really_ necessary, and could be replaced
with other code that would eventually have to do the same stuff. I agree,
that it makes compilation a bit more difficult, but once we have RPM's, it
should be quite easy.
