All that says to me is that the SIU unit can only talk over RS-232 or IrDA.
That doesn't mean that the SIU can't be talking over RS-232, while the FIR
is talking over the IrDA.

SIUIRSEL is more about the IrDA module settings than the SIU settings.  Of
course both the SIU unit and the FIR can't talk over the IrDA at the same
time.  That's what IRUSESEL bit is for, right?

The way I read the docs, it seems like the SIU can talk over RS-232 while
the FIR unit talks over IrDA at the same time.
