Someone else asked yesterday too about the status of IRDA on PPC. I seem to be the
only one in this IRDA group doing this on a PPC system. I have an Apple Macintosh
Powerbook G3 (running LinuxPPC 1999 Q3 also, and kernel 2.2.13 from kernel.org) and a
few weeks ago was finally successful to get IRDA to work on the Powerbook. However
it's not fully tested as I don't own much IRDA equipment. You can search the archives
of this list from a couple weeks ago to see my detailed post. Basically I can run the
latest IRDA irdadump and see packets on /dev/ttyS1 which the kernel sees as an IR port.
There are no RPM's at this point. In order to use IRDA you need to recompile the
kernel yourself with IRDA support or get a special kernel from someone who has done
this. You also need to compile the set if irda-utils. I'm not aware of anybody who has
made the PPC binaries available precompiled (perhaps I should do that?). Everything
compiles pretty well out of the box (Thanks Dag!). My biggest challenge is finding the
equipment and the time to test all the protocols. My personal interest is mainly for
syncing data with the Palm Pilot or the Newton, but I don't own the equipment yet (I
haven't decided which to get yet, not real impressed with the Pilot and the Newton is
discontinued.) I hope to have more time for testing my IRDA in the next few weeks.
