Hi James,

You're already one step ahead of my initial question. My first concern
was wether there exist (afordable, infrared) devices capable of
transceiving _any_ signals over a distance of approximately 15-20 mtrs
to/from a moving vehicle.

However your sugestions about the modulation of the signals are verry
useful to me.

I'm a mechanical engineering student at the Technical University Delft,
(in the Netherlands) so one may expect that I'm able to master the
needed technical knowledge of the subject through selfstudie of the
technical info in the university library etc. However I do need some
help from someone to point me in the right direction regarding the
technology that can be used.

Greetings,

Arnaud
